What is the use of the State of the Union address?

Over the years, the State of the Union address has been a annual tradition in the US. The President talks about how the country is doing, and the executive branch’s plans for the upcoming year. Some years it has been a motivational tool. Other years it’s nothing more than a political circus.

What are your thoughts? Is the address useful in this information age, or is it just a bunch of political jargon?

Complete utter waste of time and money these days. Political "Technicalities" is all I ever get out of it

The use of the State of the Union Address is the same as it was 25 years ago when I first came to Washington DC. It is part tradition, part theater, part ceremony.

It gives the President a chance to lay out his (so far they've all been men) his agenda for the upcoming year and talk about accomplishments. Put spin on things. Without interruption from the media. And it's the only time of year that the President addresses Congress.

It give the opposition party the opportunity to make their general pitch too. Too point out how lousy things are compared to what it would be if they were in power. And maybe they'll highlight a rising young star or someone who can display that party's appeal.

It's nothing more, nothing less. Hasn't changed. Hasn't gotten more or less substantial.
